Hi there! I am mum to two children – one 14 (neurotypical) and one 10 who has special needs. Since our child’s diagnosis of Fragile X Syndrome in 2013, [What is Fragile X? https://www.fragilex.org.au/], our family has arrived at its ‘new normal’ and it has lead me to become a passionate advocate for an authentically inclusive society.
We want to make a difference in our community and provide a space that is easier to be in for all families, particularly those with children with additional needs. We want this space to be a place where children of ALL abilities play together and where the barriers to differences are broken down and where acceptance is high on the agenda.
Our family knows firsthand how difficult an outing can be with a child with special needs and the challenges that come with basic day-to-day functions. For this reason, We Rock the Spectrum Kids Gym is coming to Melbourne’s Southern Metropolitan Region. We hope it to be a hub of play, nurturing, acceptance, inclusion and friendships, a place where everyone feels safe to be themselves.
As an educator in secondary school for 18 years, my enthusiasm to teach and make a difference is still strong and I cannot wait to transfer my skills and knowledge from the teaching profession over to WRTS Kids Gym Moorabbin. Having dedicated the early years of diagnosis to our son’s early intervention program and learning about how best to support him and help him develop and thrive in a world that is not always conducive to his needs, I cannot wait to create this inclusive, safe haven for all families and children so that they may grow and develop in this beneficial, calm environment.
Looking forward to meeting you all!
